On December 10, 2020, Georgian American University School of Law, Social Sciences and Diplomacy of the hosted a panel discussion - Social Rights in the Modern Era. 

The panel discussion focused on the social, economic, and cultural processes produced by the neoliberal order, which contributed to the rise of inequality and the decline of prosperity. These processes, in turn, have marginalized the idea and culture of social rights. The topic was critically discussed on the panel discussion from a social, as well as a political, economic and legal perspective.

The panel discussion was moderated by Prof. Zaza Rukhadze, vice-president of the Georgian American University, and dean of the School of Law, Social Sciences and Diplomacy; Bakar Berekashvili, professor of Political Science and Sociology at Georgian American University, Tato Khundadze, professor of Political Economy at Georgian-American University, and Gia Liluashvili, professor of Law at Georgian-American University.

On September 30, 2019, a panel discussion on the topic “Democracy and Society in a Time of Crisis: Challenges of a New Democracy” was held at Georgian American University School of Law, Social Sciences and Diplomacy. 

The panel discussion was moderated by Zaza Rukhadze, vice president of the Georgian American University and the dean of the School of Law, Social Sciences and Diplomacy. The speakers at the panel discussion were: Bakar Berekashvili - professor of Political Science and Sociology at Georgian American University; Shota Tkhelidze, lecturer at Georgian American University and analyst at Channel One; Guri Sultanishvili, lecturer at the Georgian-American University.

Bakar Berekashvili's report was about the crisis of democracy in post-Soviet societies. Special emphasis was placed on the social, cultural and historical-anthropological factors that caused this crisis. Bakar Berekashvili also spoke about the "national models" of the crisis of democracy that have emerged in the post-Soviet space.

Shota Tkhelidze's report addressed the crisis of liberal democracy in Eastern Europe, which led to the emergence of dichotomies in Western and Eastern Europe. Guri Sultanishvili spoke about the crisis of the liberal class in Georgia and its impact on the idea of democracy. He also spoke about the difficulties and challenges that accompany the crisis of liberalism in the new Georgian democracy. 

  • Professor Göran Therborn's visits GAU - June 2019  

On June 10, 2019, at 17:00, a public lecture by Göran Terborn, emeritus professor at University of Cambridge, on the topic "Cities of Power, Cities of Inequality" was held at the Georgian American University. 

Prof. Therborn is a Marxism-oriented sociologist who has written extensively on the subject of class, power, ideology, and inequality.  

The public lecture was moderated by Bakar Berekashvili, professor of Political Science and Sociology at Georgian American University. 

The public lecture was held within the framework of a project supported by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. 

  • Panel Discussion at Georgian American University "Post-Soviet Transformation in Georgia - Process, Outcomes and Challenges" - September 2018  

On September 25, 2018, a panel discussion was held at the School of Law, Social Sciences and Diplomacy of the Georgian American University, where speakers Zaza Shatirishvili, Bakar Berekashvili and Giorgi Gvinjilia spoke about the political, social, economic and cultural contexts of the post-Soviet transformation. 

  • Prof. Stephan Rindlisbacher visits GAU - November 2017

On November 28, 2017, professor Stephan Rindlisbacher, a researcher at the University of Bern, delivered a public lecture titled "The Swiss Political System" at the Georgian American University School of Law, Social Sciences and Diplomacy.

  • Prof. Ger Duijzings visits GAU – May, 2017

On May 25, 2017, Professor Ger Duijzings of the University of Regensburg, Germany, visited Georgian American University School of Law, Social Sciences and Diplomacy to present his book titled Engaged Urbanism. 

  • Prof. Peter Otselik visits GAU – May 2017

On May 2-6 (2017)  at the invitation of the Georgian-American University (GAU) School of Law, Social Sciences and Diplomacy, Professor Peter Otselik of the Department of International Relations and European Studies at Masaryk University (Czech Republic) visited GAU. During the visit, Professor Otselik met with the school dean and university vice president, Professor Zaza Rukhadze, and discussed future plans for cooperation between the two universities. Also, during the visit, Professor Otselik delivered a public lecture on "Climate Change Policy in the Czech Republic", during which the speaker spoke about the peculiarities of the climate change policy in the Czech Republic in both political and social contexts. The lecture also discussed the challenges of energy policy on the example of the Czech Republic.

  • Discussion Cycle at Georgian American University - September 2016  

On September 9-10, 2016, two panel discussions were held at the Georgian American University on the topic: 2016 Parliamentary Elections in Georgia: Agenda of the Political Forces, Problems and Challenges. 

The first panel discussion was held on September 9 and focused on the following topic: Georgian politics and the society up against parliamentary elections: Party Agenda and Citizen Involvement.

During the discussion, the speakers (Zaza Rukhadze, Bakar Berekashvili, Marina Muskhelishvili) talked about the main political tendencies and events around the upcoming parliamentary elections. The challenges of constitutionalism and the agenda of various political forces on issues such as democratization, development and modernization were also discussed, alongisde the degree of citizen involvement and approaches before the parliamentary elections.

The second discussion was held on September 10 and focused on the following topic: 2016 Parliamentary Elections and its Challenges: Foreign Policy, Defense and Security. During the panel discussion, the speakers (Tato Khundadze, Giorgi Gobronidze and Vasil Kuchukhidze) summarized the anatomy of Georgia's foreign policy, defense and security in the wake of the pre-election period; impact of foreign policy and security factors on the elections; the vision of the state and political forces on the country's foreign policy and defense. 

  • Prof. Robert Wade visits GAU - April 2016

On April 26, 2016, Robert Wade, professor of Political Economy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), delivered a lecture at the Georgian American University on the topic: China and the Perspectives of a Tripolar World.

The lecture was about China’s growing power on the Eurasian continent, through which it seeks to create a tripolar international order. In western academic and political circles, there is an active discussion about China's economic and political achievements and its strengthening as a third political pole. China has proven that its economic system is resilient and can effectively deal with global crises, while EU countries and Russia continue to experience the most difficult economic fluctuations.

  • Prof. Radosław Markowski visits GAU – April, 2016

From April 1 to April 15, 2016, Radoslaw Markowski, a political scientist and professor at the Warsaw University of Social Sciences and Humanities, delivered a series of lectures on "Democratic Transformations in Central and Eastern Europe" at the Georgian American University.  Researchers and students of the Georgian American University took part in Professor Markowski's lectures. Students of Tbilisi State University and Ilia State University also participated. A total of 5 lectures were held, addressing the following issues:

Consolidation of Democracy: Sequence and Indicators 

The Quality of Democracy and Political Representation 

European Visions and Assessments of Democracy: Differences between the East and the West

Democracy Crisis - Problems in Hungary and Poland
